Problem now is that I get this message when I try to import my videos: C: Users Brendan Videos My Flip Videos 002.AVI could not be imported. The required codec was not downloaded automatically because the Download codecs automatically check box is not selected in the Options dialog box. These videos have come off my Flip recorder and never posed a problem before? I have tried checking and unchecking compatability boxes in the Options dialogue box. I don’t particularly want to download video format converters if avoidable as they tend to want to mess with your settings.

Why should we go to the trouble of recording media in high quality formats, only to find that we have to go backwards and convert the file to some low quality Microsoft format.

The problem is with MS MM and the inability of the programmers to produce a versatile software. Basically anything Free from Microsoft is just not going to do the job.

I wish I had a solution. The best I can come up with is this. Helps improve MM with some, but not all Codecs. AVI files are actually a container for video, audio and other data eg subtitles. The redering Codec for the video component can be different from one AVI to the next.

There is no set AVI codec. For some reason, even though I must have the codecs and filters installed (the file plays in VLC) neither MM or Media Player recognise it. All bloody stupid really.
