Johnny Winter Second Winter Legacy Edition Blogspot

11.09.2019

Did somebody compare the sound quality of the newly remastered 'Second Winter' CD (Legacy Edition) witht he bonus Live CD to other available versions of this album? I listened to it today in a record store, but I can't say whether it sounds better than previously released versions. I do have the European CBS version of the single album which sounds alright. I'd be interested in the new version, especially since the Live CD seems to be quite good, but I only want to buy it if it sounds better than my current version of the studio album. Any insight would be appreciated.

Today, I received the 2-CD „Legacy Edition“ of Johnny Winter’s „Second Winter“ (COL 511231 2), and I just comapred it to the other Columbia version of the single CD I own (Made in Austria, 467832 2, red boxes on label). The new version is louder. Judging by the look of the WAV.file in CoolEditPro, it doesn’t seem to be compressed, or if so, only very slightly, but it is about 3-4 dB louder (peak level is at 0 dB).

I am not sure which version I like better. The new CD seems to have a little bit better definition compared to the old one, and the old version sounds just slightly warmer and seems to have a little bit nicer bass. No big advantage for the new version to these ears.

I noticed in the past, that some Columbia CD’s sound much better in their early European version compared to early U.S. One example I recall for sure, and having a drastic difference, was Tommy Bolin’s second solo effort “Private Eyes”. The live CD which comes with the new “Second Winter” version is really worth the money. Although sonically not the greatest recording (but just fine to listen to), it really offers some great playing, and I can really recommend it to everyone who likes Johnny Winter. The first CD also features a couple of bonus tracks which are quite good as well.

All in all, I can really recommend this new CD. I would be interested if anyone compared this new version to the original US CD version. I have a feeling that the original US CD doesn’t sound as good as the European version.

Johnny Winter Second Winter Legacy Edition

Also, did anyone compare Santana’s first recoding in the new Legacy Edition to other available releases? I have the MFSL edition of 'Second Winter' and I just recently purchased the new, 2CD Deluxe Edition on Sony Legacy. I A-B'd the two versions today. Here's what I found: I love them both! The MFSL version has better low-end response.

The bass guitar has more definition, and is easily distinguishable from the kick drum sound. On the other hand, the new Sony Legacy 2CD Deluxe version seems to have better imaging as far as the vocals are concerned. In other words, the Sony Legacy version gives me the 'you're there' feeling, like Johnny Winter is in my listening room, while I like the bass response better on the MFSL version. I guess I won't be trading in my MFSL, and I'll keep the 2CD Deluxe Edition for the live stuff. So much for whittling down the collection! Click to expand.Just checked the MFSL.

Winter

That songs starts with John Winter 'chuckling' (or something like that), and then, at around 0:02 into the song, there is a sound for about 1 second, which almost sounds like a needle drop (sorry for that comparison, it's been almost 20 years since I last played any vinyl, so my memory is slipping.). I assume that is the noise you meant. If you like this type of Johnny Winter, then you need both, the MFSL as well as the Legacy Edition. The MFSL sounds better, and the Legacy Edition gives you a couple of bonus studio tracks plus the excellent live disc.
