#1 So for the past 3 days, I've been trying to set Silent Hunter 3 back up on my PC. Haven't been able to play it since I got Windows 7, the day it came out. My first problem was that it would crash instantly on launch. After looking around online, I found that it was the copy protection software, which is incompatible with Windows 7, and was falsely believing my install to have been a pirated copy (I legally own the game). So, after more googling, I find that some people have gotten it to work by uninstalling the copy protection software. BUT, that can't be done without some poorly made removal tool straight from the company that made the software in the first place.
I tried to get SH3 running on Windows 7 Enterprise with 1.4 patch and got the. I was told they will not make a patch for silent hunter 3 to play on windows OS 7.

So I finally get that uninstalled, and it still doesn't work. After a third bout of googling, it seems people with pirated copies can play fine. (The piracy prevention software prevents legal owners from playing, but not pirates!!!) By now, I'm pretty frustrated, so I find a copy of the game online (which isn't really pirating since I do own the game), and download and install that. This time the game boots, makes it past the intro cinematics, and crashes right as it finishes loading. Now I'm down to one last option. I go download VMware Player, so I can make a virtual machine. I install Windows XP on the VM, and after some twiddling with the settings I get SH3 to install.
But it still won't boot. The copy protection software throws an error saying the game can only be played on 'Miscrosoft 95 Server Edition'. That's not my typo, that's exactly what it said. If anyone has any ideas of what I can do now, I'd appreciate it.
Mostly though, I just wanted someone to hear all the horrible stuff I've gone through the past 3 days. #2 Looks like SH3 does use Ubisofts crap DRM software, my guess is that it's probably using a 16 bit installer which won't function properly in Win7 64bit.
Likely VMware does not have drivers to allow for 3D rendering, SH3 is only 7 years old and as such is going to require a 3D accelerator which VM ware isn't setup for. You could check with UBI soft to see if they have a patch, it's highly highly highly unlikely that they do, but it's worth checking. In the extremely likely event that they do not, you're list of options are short.
You could download a cracked version and use that. You could try Microsoft's Virtual PC, which is a free VM similar to VMware. However Virtual PC supports some direct x and direct draw functionality that makes it a good choice for trying to run older games.
Your only other option is to do a dual boot or setup a secondary hard drive with XP or earlier version of windows. It sucks, but that's pretty much the only options. Unfortunately most game publishers don't give two shits about supporting games that are more than a few years old. #3 Thanks for showing interest. Anyways, I've already tried the cracked version of the game, it helped but didn't solve everything. In the legit version of the game, it wouldn't even boot. With the crack, it boots and crashes just before the main menu.
Creation kit 1.9.35:. I looked around, and VMware does have its own virtual graphics card, but I couldn't find any specs on it. I'll give Virtual PC a shot next, but if that doesn't work, what does dual-booting entail? I've installed OS's before, so I have an idea of what I'm doing, but do I need to reformat my HD, or can I re-partition without wiping everything? If you have extra space floating around on your hdd in windows 7 right click computermanage and click storage you can create a partition to install the os on.
